Australia Review

The Catalog - Produced by Nick Andre and E Da Boss (Slept On)

Great summer time beats from these two Bay area DJs/producers who invite in their buddies including members of Blacklaicious, Living Legends and Oakland Faders for some good time funk. Things get moving from track two ‘Things Change Forever’ which finds Nebulus bragging among other things about his maid that cooks “curry and lentils”. I want one of them! The seamless breaks and beats on this really make for some free and easy listening yet it has that same all over the shop feel that the best mix tape has to offer. While in the Bay Area it sometimes seems that everybody and their little brother and sister are underground hip hop producers or performers the Catalog stands out as a record that brings not only the chops but fun... While Lateef from Quannum makes a brief appearance it would have been cool to have heard more of him. A small gripe on what is overall a great record. Give them a few more years and Slept On as well as the UK’s Lewis records could be rivaling Def Jux or Stones Throw as indie hip hop’s masters.

Performer Mag Reviews "The Catalog"

Bay area DJs/producers Nick Andre and E Da Boss bring an eclectic edge to hip-hop heads, serving up hot soulful samples over the funkiest breakbeats with The Catalog, an 18-track album hosted by the Yay’s own Gift of Gab (Blackalicious) and Lateef The Truth Speaker (Quannum Fam). DJ Platurn of the Oakland Faders handles both the mixing and rhythmic cuts for the record in addition to E and Nick’s breakbeat truth. Disappointingly, Gab and Lateef drop a minimal amount of verses, leaving room for Nebulus, Bicasso (Living Legends), Jern Eye and King Eljen to liven things up. “Alcatraz Session” is a notable psychedelic-feeling track remixed by Headnodic of the Crown City Rockers, and the highlight track, “Go,” featuring Jern Eye, is as straight up as it gets for that raw-type sleek shit. “NT3” and “Bop T Bop” are interlude-length bangers and should have been full-length joints. “NYC” featuring Nebulus is an attractive song with ambient chants illuminating.

Beware, commercial-type “Glam Hoppers,” this record is NOT for you. If you want to know what real hip-hop is, peep this record. The creative art of The Catalog explores deep abstract styles while sustaining the roots of the b-boy type beats and grime-y funky loops. Slept On Records may not be as slept on after the record drops. Experimental music seems to be at its height, with the mashing of genres together. For the mixtape feel that The Catalog personifies, it is still what should be viewed as a solid, well-planned record from front to back. (Slept On Records)

Verses Magazine review of "The Catalog"

The bay area has a rich history of independent hip-hop artist creating sounds and movements that soon infiltrate the music industry and take the world by storm. The Catalog is yet another example of why The Bay is the Mecca where independent hip-hop continues to grow and flourish. If Ya featuring Nebulus (moonrocks) ties the concept together and breaks down the elements of what hip-hop is and will continue to be til the walls come down. Guest vocals by bay area indie all stars and an impeccable mix by DJ Platurn of The Oakland Faders make this project one to take notice of, so DONT SLEEP!!!

Ground Lift Mag Reviws "The Catalog"

This one’s dope, if a bit confusing. Nick Andre and E Da Boss are two Bay Area DJ/collector/producers who bust out break-laden beat goodies on their small but funky label Slept On Records. E is actually the Gift of Gab’s show DJ, as well. This is technically a mix assembled by DJ Platurn of the Oakland Faders, although it features mostly tracks by E and Andre along with some select vinyl rarities and break goodness. On the vocal side, we have a couple drops from Gift of Gab and Lateef of Quannum fam as well as nice rhyme turns from Jern Eye, Nebulus, King Eljen, and Bicasso from Living Legends. The rare funk joints are often mixed into the song that E and Andre sampled them for, although “Breaks With Platurn” provides a nice funk medley about two-thirds of the way through. My favorites are the loping neck-snapper “Things Change,” the jazzy instrumental “Rick’s Joint,” the psyche-loop head-banger “Alcatraz Session” (remixed by Headnodic of Crown City Rockers), and “Ley Ja Kitte Door” by DJ Earflaps, who brings us a b-boy break-tempoed heater that flips from Japanese koto snippets to sick desi/bollywood loops. Nice. I’m not sure where you can get this, but for fans of funky beat bizness, it’s worth seeking out.
